What is a Sponsored Post or Sponsored Giveaway?
A sponsored post is a specific post that I have been paid to write. The financial compensation for these posts help me pay for the many costs of running this website. Occasionally, a company will “pay” with me a gift basket or gift card, but I don’t like to accept these methods of payments, because I can’t pay my bills with them!
I only write sponsored posts for brands that I actually use at home and trust. When you see this button on one of my blog posts, I’m saying that I have been compensated to write that particular post.
A sponsored giveaway is where the prizes for the giveaway have been purchased, or provided by, the company being featured. Sometimes I run a giveaway and purchase the prize myself, but sometimes a company will offer to send their product directly to the winner at no cost to me. This button will show you when the company has provided or paid for the product in a giveaway.
What about Sponsored Reviews?
A sponsored review happens when a blogger has been paid to review a product. I DO NOT DO SPONSORED REVIEWS. Often, I will review a press sample (a product which I have received for free), and I always disclose it as such and give my honest opinions of the product. I also do not accept money in exchange for a positive review.
What is a Product Review?
A product review is an opinionated blog post, where I talk about the things I like (and sometimes dislike) about a product.
I never write or film sponsored reviews. This means that I don't accept compensation for reviewing a product.
What is compensation? Some people will argue that the free product itself is compensation. And in the eyes of the government, it usually is, since you have to claim it as income on your tax. However, as many bloggers will tell you, the product is not usually considered compensation. Here's why:
- If I get a box of crackers to review, the value of that box of crackers won't cover the time and effort that it will take to me to write the review.
- If I receive a $300 blender, that could still not cover my time and effort. It takes more work to review a blender than it does a box of crackers!
- If I don't like the product, I will get rid of it either by donating, giving it to a friend or throwing it out. Do you throw out money? I didn't think so.
Most importantly, compensation indicates certain expectations. When a company sends out free stuff to media reps, they are taking a risk. The person might love it and feature it, but the person could also hate the product and the company often does not get the product back. It's a loss for them. However, when a company pays someone to review something they've received, the expectation is that the review must be done, and usually it must be a positive review.
How can your review be unbiased if you received the product for free?
Unfortunately, you just have to trust me when I say that I always give my honest opinion of anything that I review. I know that there are some people who will always write glowing reviews about everything they receive, but that's not me.
If you received the product for free, and the company expects you to write a review, doesn't that make it a sponsored?
Nope! When Lancôme sends their newest lipstick to a beauty editor to review, does that mean that editor is automatically sponsored by Lancôme? Obviously not. You can read more about what counts as a sponsored review above.
What is a Press Sample?
A press sample is a product that someone has been sent to me, for free, with the hopes that I will review or feature it on my blog. Companies, public relations firms, and similar organizations will often send products to media outlets for consideration. This allows us to check it out, test it, and determine whether it is a product we want to talk about. Basically, it means that I did not go out and buy the product myself. It was sent to me for free to try out.
Please note that I do not accept compensation for product reviews!

What is Press Coverage?
Press Coverage refers to information that came from either a press release or press event (or both). Media outlets are often sent press releases that provide information on something new, like a product, restaurant launch etc. These press releases usually contain information about who, what, where, when and why, which makes it easier for a member of the press (or a blogger) to write about the new thing.
Similarly, a press event or blogger event is held with the intention of providing information about something. However, it usually has the added benefit of photo opportunities.
