In this monthly series I’m interviewing my favourite bloggers and sharing their kitchens, typical workdays and favourite eats. This month I’m chatting with Stephanie Le of I am a Food Blog!
About Stephanie Le:
If you follow the Canadian blog scene, you probably have heard of Stephanie. She started off cooking her way through the entire Momofuku cookbook (while her husband Mike photographed the project), then moved on to create the award-winning site called I am a Food Blog. With 6 years of blogging experience, and her own cookbook, Stephanie is one blogger that you definitely want to follow.
How would you describe your blog for people who haven’t seen it before?
I am a Food Blog is a fun, friendly food blog with clean modern design. It focuses on the food I love cooking at home – the recipes range from super easy to complicated and involved, but ultimately every recipe on there is something that I’ve made and loved. There’s a huge focus on photography because both my husband (who helps on the blog too!) and I are very visual people.
You cook some seriously delicious-looking food at your house! What’s in your fridge right now?
Duck pho stock, leftover paella, carrot cake, steamed rice rolls, eggs, and a bunch of produce, including green onions, which are my go to herb.
Hungry friends show up at your door unexpectedly – what are you going to feed them?
That totally depends on how much time I have or what I have in the fridge! In this case, I’d either do some leftover paella, given new life with fresh herbs and crispy olive oil fried eggs. Or maybe I’d see if they’re down for a bowl of pho!
If all that fails, there are eggs – I always, always have eggs!
In an ideal world I’d have a selection of meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, bread and crackers on hand so I could put together the ultimate snacking board.
What do you love about your kitchen?
I love that we don’t have cabinets on top of the countertop! It makes it super open and our black glass backsplash is both sleek and easy to clean, which is always a plus.
Do you listen to music while you cook?
I LOVE listening to music while I cook. I like a huge variety – I’m always listening to random Spotify playlists. Right now I’m digging the “Indie Pop Chillout” playlist.
Name one item in your kitchen that you would be devastated to lose.
Probably my knives. I love me a good sharp knife. In fact, I’ve been known to travel with a knife sharpener 😉
It’s the middle of a hectic week, what are you making for dinner?
This really depends – most of the time, we’ll eat what I’m blogging, so that can mean just about anything. But if I’m looking for a throw it together kind of meal, fried rice or a giant salad is always a good option. They both have the added benefit of cleaning out the fridge, and that always appeals to me.
When you’re not cooking or blogging, what are you doing?
Traveling, hanging outside, chilling with friends, taking photos! We’ve just started to get into hiking, and camping is something that we’re getting into too.
When was the last time you make a bad dish/set food on fire/ate an entire pie in one sitting?
Yesterday I made a Spanish tortilla that I wasn’t happy with. I was being lazy and didn’t pull out the mandolin to slice the potatoes and the result just wasn’t what I wanted it to be. It tasted fine but since it was for a dinner party, I wanted it to be perfect. I ended up just putting it in the fridge and starting all over again. Goes to show, shortcuts don’t always work!
