I usually try to plan my meals on the weekend. This doesn’t take me very long… I just think about what I want to make and then buy what I need from the grocery. But somehow, every once in a while, I find myself starting at an empty fridge around 6:00pm. Sometimes I’ve just forgotten to take my protein out to thaw, and other times I just haven’t made it to the grocery store. Either way, I end up grabbing take out because I don’t have anything to cook.
This is where Fresh Canteen comes in. If you dislike meal planning, or you just don’t have time to make it to the grocery store, then this service might be for you.
Fresh Canteen is a ready-to-cook meal kit delivery service, which operates in Toronto, Ontario. As a subscriber you can order meal kits for 2-4 dishes every week, and everything you need to make that meal will be shipped straight to your door. You can arrange to have your box delivered to your house, condo, or even to your workplace. Right now it appears that they can deliver to anyone in the G.T.A., and soon they will be able to ship all over Ontario.
I really like the convenience of this service. It saves me from having to shop for ingredients, and everything arrives pre-measured. It’s also nice to try new recipes like Date Channa Dal Salad (shown below) or Shrimp Cakes with Mexican Chipotle Sauce.
Fresh Canteen ships the ingredients and recipe in an insulated box, which stays cold for several hours. This means that you don’t have to be home to receive the package. Personally, I would try to make sure that it’s not sitting outside in the middle of summer for too long.
All meats, poultry and fish items are packaged at the bottom of the box, so that they are sitting on top of the cold gel-packs. This helps to ensure that they stay cold and fresh for as long as possible. When you box arrives, be sure to put these items in your fridge A.S.A.P. if you’re not going to cook it right away. Also, your fish dish should always be cooked first so it’s not sitting in your fridge for several days.
Another neat feature is that this company tries to provide meals that are seasonal, with locally sourced meats and produce. It looks like the chicken that I received in my most recent box was from Ontario.
Fresh Canteen posts new, healthy, recipes on their website every Saturday. You then have until Friday night to select the dishes you want, and everything will be shipped to you by the following Tuesday. All you have to do then is wash your produce, read your recipe, and start cooking!
Each dish from Fresh Canteen costs $12.50 per serving. So, if you ordered 2 servings of 3 dishes, you’re looking at a $75 bill. Yes, that is a lot of money for three dinners, I know. I can buy a whole lot of groceries with $75, but it’s important to realize that you’re paying for the convenience of the service. Someone else is buying the groceries, measuring the portions, and then sending it to you directly. For some people, the expense is definitely worth the time they are saving.
This meal kit service is meant to be a weekly subscription. You select your meals weekly, receive your kits weekly, and are billed weekly. If that model doesn’t work for you though, you can opt out of the subscription and just order when you feel like it. Personally, I prefer to just place an order when I know I’ll be strapped for time, or if I have a special occasion coming up.
I’ve tried 3 different recipes so far, and they have all been delicious! Those Tahini Chicken Thighs in the photo above were fantastic, and I loved the Roasted Mediterranean Chicken with Feta and Olive in the photo below. And the best part is that I can make these again! All I have to do is look at my recipe cards to see what ingredients I need and follow the step-by-step instructions.
If you’re interested in trying the Fresh Canteen service, why not use my referral link? You’ll get $30 off your first dinner, and I’ll get a $15 credit. Win win!
